Chapter Eleven

From the outside, Magic Minds seemed like it was completely oblivious to the chaos that was happening just a few blocks away, and for all I knew, it was. The doors were closed, as usual during the day, and nothing looked at all out of place. Still, my heart thumped as I hurried through the front doors — until I heard the familiar, calming sounds of children laughing.

“Thank Lilith,” I whispered. I wasn’t sure what I’d been expecting.

The children were all gathered at the back of the room around easels that stood taller than they did. A pair of kids at each took turns scribbling on a piece of canvas with crayons and markers and having the time of their little lives. With little effort, I found Ellie’s red pigtails toward the far corner of the room where she stood with her back to me, swirling giant circles of paint on her canvas while singing and bobbing side to side just like I used to do when I was her age.

“Good afternoon, Zoe!” Bridget called from the center of the ring of easels, then made her way between them to meet Jaina and me. “Are you here for Blaise? Beau already picked him up,” she said with her voice lowered.

“Actually, no, I’m here for Ellie. Look, Bridget, I don’t know if you’ve heard, but there’s a bit of a situation out in the town square, and I think you’d better call everyone’s parents to come and get them too.”

Bridget’s eyes widened. “What? What’s happening?”

“What Zoe’s trying to say is that there’s an angry mob that’s currently smashing out the windows of the town hall and your school probably isn’t safe,” Jaina said, and all the color drained from Bridget’s face.

“Smooth,” I spat at Jaina, but she shrugged.

“No sense in sugar coating it. This is serious.”

“I-I’m sorry to ask this, but would you mind keeping an eye on the children for a few minutes while I make some calls?” Bridget asked slowly, as if in a daze.

“Of course,” I said, though I hoped she hurried. Though Magic Minds wasn’t directly in the line of fire, it was close enough to the town hall that if things got out of control, the mayhem could easily spread here — and I didn’t want Ellie, or any of the other children, anywhere near that.

“Thank you,” Bridget said and hurried away to her office, where she shut the door and went right to the phone.

“Watch the door for me, please?” I asked Jaina, and she nodded. Good. I didn’t want to put her unpredictable mouth in range of the children — Lilith only knew what she might say to upset them, too. I made my way over to Ellie, smiling at the other children I passed who probably recognized me from the day before. Mercifully, none of them seemed bothered by the situation with Blaise and Cade earlier in the day, but then again, children forgave and forget quickly.

“Hi, sweetie,” I said as I kneeled next to Ellie.
